SHE'S THE BEST THING IN IT is a feature length documentary film directed by Nyswaner.
When Tony Award winner (Grey Gardens), and theater veteran, Mary Louise Wilson travels to her hometown of New Orleans to teach acting to a group of reality-TV addicted theater majors, Nyswaner follows her with a camera crew recording this clash of generations and cultures. When she challenges her students to “behave truthfully in imaginary circumstances,” by calling upon their own emotional experiences, they are forced to examine the losses suffered in their young lives, including the lingering trauma of Katrina. Ms. Wilson recalls the city of her youth and the painful realities that lay beneath the colorful surface, including the familial conflicts that propelled her into a life of trying to “make people laugh.” The film includes interviews with theater and film stars, including Meryl Streep, Frances McDormand, Valerie Harper, Charlotte Rae, Melissa Leo, Tyne Daly, and Estelle Parsons, discussing their struggles on the way to becoming actors and the special challenges facing women in the field. Produced by award-winning filmmaker, Neda Armian (Rachel Getting Married, Jimmy Carter Man from Plains), SHE'S THE BEST THING IN IT is a funny, moving examination of the actor’s craft and some brave women who have devoted their lives to it.
